COURSE TITLE: Math 138/ Mathematics for Teachers

COURSE-LEVEL SLO(s) ASSESSED THIS SEMESTER:
(1.) Students will be able to perform standard operations on sets.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: Students were given a cumulative final exam at the end of the course. A question was chosen for assessment and graded with the following scale: 0=wrong, 1=more wrong than right, 2=more right than wrong, 3=correct.
The question dealt with finding unions and intersections of 3 numeric sets. It also required students to understand basic vocabulary of numbers, such as even, odd, whole, divisible, etc.
ANALYSIS OF ASSESSMENT: What do these results tell you about your students' achievements on the targeted SLO(s)? The analysis has let us spot the problems that our students are weakest on, as well as insuring that grading is more or less even among sections.
The question dealt with finding unions and intersections of 3 numeric sets. It also required students to understand basic vocabulary of numbers, such as even, odd, whole, divisible, etc. The median score was 2, while the average was 1.73. Fewer students showed a mastery of this SLO than expected.
PLAN: Indicate if your assessment results reveal a need for course improvement in order to improve student achievement, and what plans your department will make to do so.
The results were discussed at the mathematics retreat in February 2011. It was unclear whether the problem lay with the mathematical vocabulary of the students, or with the mathematical operations required. Both topics are part of the SLO. In following semesters it has been recommended that students do more work with multiple sets, instead of focusing on only 2 at a time. We hope this will insure a greater degree of abstraction as required by this course.
We will also recommend drilling on vocabulary. These will be tested in quizzes and the like. It is imperative for the future teachers taking this course to fully understand basic mathematical terms.
Next semester we will assess this course again, as well as its continuation course M139. Results from the 2 semesters will be compared at the next retreat.
