Course Title: M145/Beginning Algebra I

Course-Level SLOs assessed this semester:
Students will solve equations and inequalities (linear, absolute value, systems).
Method of Assessment:
The above SLO was assessed by three questions on the final exam. One question assessed each of the follow: linear equation, absolute value equation and system of equation. Seventeen students were assessed.
Analysis of Assessment:
Each student response was given a score of 0 to 3, where 0 is completely wrong and 3 is completely correct.
Linear Equation: Overall average was 2.7, which is quite strong. Thirteen out of seventeen students got this problem completely correct. Students have a solid grasp of solving linear equations.
Absolute Value Equation: Overall average: 2.1. Students had more difficulty with this type of equation, yet still showed a respectable level of mastery. Six out of seventeen students scored 1, which means they had significant issues but did something correctly. No students scored 0, meaning all students attempted and did something correctly.
System of Equations: Overall average: 2.06. Of the three assessment questions, students showed least mastery with this type. Three students did not attempt the problem (scored 0) and no students scored 1. Students that attempted the problem either scored 2 or 3, meaning that those that attempted the problem generally knew what they were doing.
Plan:
The Developmental Curriculum group discussed the results at the annual Math Division retreat. Instructors will be encouraged to work with students in bringing up the mastery level on Absolute Value equations and Systems of Equations.
