Course Assessment Report
Semester/Year: Fall 2010, Winter 2011
Department: Mathematics
Course Title: M119/Intermediate Algebra I
Participants: two sections in F2010, one in W2011
Course-Level SLOs assessed this semester:
Students will simplify algebraic expressions (exponential, polynomial, rational, radical)
Students will graph functions (linear, rational, radical)
Method of Assessment:
Ten multiple choice questions were administered as part of the final exam, for two sections in the Fall 2010 semester and one section in the Winter 2011 session. Seven of the questions assessed simplifying, and three assessed functions and graphing. The data was collected and summarized on the attached sheet. These were presented to the division at our annual division retreat.
Analysis of Assessment:
A more detailed analysis is included on the attached sheet, labeled item analysis. All of the responses were recorded, with the student only getting credit for the correct answer.
SLO 1: Simplifying algebraic expressions was tested on seven problems simplifying complex fractions (average = 52%), simplifying radical expressions (average = 58%), order of operations (average = 44%), simplifying rational expressions (average = 33%), simplifying a determinant (average = 78%), working with a geometric sequence (average = 80%), and simplifying a complex number (average = 87%) Students seemed to have the most difficulty with rational expressions. However, it was noted that about 29% got to the answer correctly, but forgot to reduce. The other question below 50% correct concerned the order of operation which also involved rationals. The division noted an ongoing difficulty with fractions in general. Students did very well with determinants, geometric sequences, and complex number multiplication. Overall average is 61%.
SLO 2: Functions and graphing average =63% functions and graphing (64%). Three questions involved functions and graphing function notation (average = 71%), slope of a line (average = 84%) and finding an equation of a perpendicular line (average = 38%). Some of the difficulty of the perpendicular line problem might have been with the problem of standard form versus slope-intercept form. Overall average is 64%
It was noted that although it was a small sample of only three classes, one of which was for the winter short session, percentages were higher for the short session, often significantly.
Plan:
The division discussed the results at their annual retreat. While it is difficult to make too many comparisons between the multiple choice problems on this exam with the right-wrong grading on the common final for Math 101/120, It was noticed that some of the topics had similar results on the common final.
One workshop per semester is given to communicate common final information to the adjunct instructors. This information will be included in the next workshop.
