COURSE TITLE: Math 101 / Intermediate Algebra

COURSE-LEVEL SLO(s) ASSESSED THIS SEMESTER:

(2.) Simplifying algebraic expressions
(3.) Graphing functions and relations
(4.) Application problems
(5.) Using formulas of sequences and series
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: All SLOs were assessed in the common final. The common final is graded and analyzed on a department wide-scale. The scale used is right(1) and wrong (0).
ANALYSIS OF ASSESSMENT: What do these results tell you about your students' achievements on the targeted SLO(s)? The analysis has let us spot the problems that our students are weakest on, as well as insuring that grading is more or less even among sections.
SLO#1 was targeted by questions asking students to solve an higher order equation, radical equation, quadratic equation, logarithmic equation, and a rational equation and inequality. Average score was 0.253
SLO#2 was targeted by questions asking students to simplify complex fractions, exponential expressions, rational expressions and radical expressions. Average score was 0.296
SLO#3 was targeted by questions asking students to graph a parabola, an ellipse, an exponential function, and inequalities. Average score was 0.378
SLO#4 was targeted by questions asking students to solve geometric, rate related and interest rate word problems. Average score was 0.2975
SLO#5 was targeted by questions asking students about binomial expansions and geometric series. Average score was 0.125
This exam was more difficult than previous exams and the scores reflect that. We are also having some difficulty judging the results with right/wrong grading as even a very small error means the score is 0. Obviously these are then graded again by the instructor. The more esoteric problems seem to create difficulties, as students still seem to have a problem applying concepts.
PLAN: Indicate if your assessment results reveal a need for course improvement in order to improve student achievement, and what plans your department will make to do so.
We discussed these results at our annual mathematics retreat, and have decided to hold workshops to help instructors deal with the problems that students seem to find most difficult. All these topics will be tested again in the Spring, at the Common Final, which we plan to alter slightly. We have increased the number of application problems from 2 to 4. This has given us a better overview of where students are having difficulty. Students will be informed of this ahead of time, so that they can spend more of the semester focusing on these problems. We will discuss the results at our next retreat.
