New ESL Students:
Step 1: Take a placement test. This test takes about one hour and can be taken at the Main Campus at 1500 N. Verdugo Road or at the Garfield Campus at 1122 E. Garfield. Make an appointment at the site at which you wish to be tested between the hours: Monday - Thursday 8:00 am - 8:00 pm., and Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Their are often waiting list to take the placement test at the Garfield Campus, so we suggest you make an appointment at the Assessment Center (SF 112) on the Main Campus.
Step 2: Students who test at the Garfield Campus will immediately receive their scores. Students who test on the main campus may pick up their test results at SF 112 and receive a class assignment at the Noncredit ESL office at SF 120. If there is no room in the class you want, you will be registered and placed on the waiting list for that class
Step 3: Registration for all classes is done online. Go to Continuing Education and check for the enrollment dates. Once enrollment is open, click on the Noncredit ESL class schedule and choose the class you want to take. When you register, you will print out a confirmation form that you must sign and bring with you to class along with your test placement form. Be sure to register for your correct level (determined by the placement test.)
Continuing ESL Students:
In order to register for another ESL class the following semester, you must have an ESL Placement Recommendation form from the previous class. If you do not have this form, you will have to take the ESL Placement Test. Students who are already enrolled for an ESL class for credit at GCC do not need to be tested. Bring your credit test scores to the Garfield Campus.
