2. Students should be able to deduce meanings of new words from context and reply to basic recall questions on reading comprehension tests.

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT:

SLO #2 was assessed by reviewing results of the division-wide standardized level 2 reading/vocabulary final exam. Results were based on a random sampling of the exams from 5 ESL 126 courses that were taught by part time instructors in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

ANALYSIS OF ASSESSMENT: What do these results tell you about your students' achievements on the targeted SLO(s)?

SLO #1: Results showed that 88% of the students were able to decode and comprehend reading passages at the 2500-word vocabulary level. Student achievement was on target for decoding and comprehending.

SLO #2: 90% of students were able to deduce meaning of new words from context. This appeared to be an area of student strength based on an analysis of the final exam. 88% of students were able to reply to inference as well as basic recall questions.

PLAN: Indicate if your assessment results reveal a need for course improvement in order to improve student achievement, and what plans your department will make to do so.

SLO #1: It was determined by the participants that a flex activity should be made available for all 126 instructors in order to address any concerns they may have and review grading policies. A meeting will be scheduled for Spring 2009.

SL0 #2: It was determined by the participants that students clearly demonstrated an ability to deduce meanings of new words from context and reply to basic recall questions on reading comprehension tests.

WHAT COURSE(s) WILL YOU ASSESS IN THE FOLLOWING SEMESTER? You might re-assess for the same SLO(s) with the implementation of your new plan, and/or for another SLO and/or course.
