CROSS COUNTRY

    The men and women's teams opened up the 2010 season Saturday with some outstanding results at the Fullerton Invitational. The defending state championship women's team finished sixth with 222 points and first among community colleges with five four-year school topping the leader board led by meet winner UCLA with 24 points, Long Beach State was second with 71 points and Cal State Fullerton was third with 98. The men's team finished eighth overall and first among community colleges with 222 points. UCLA was first with 23 points followed by Long Beach state with 68 and Cal State Fullerton with 92.

    Sophomore Brianna Jauregui was the top finisher for the Lady Vaqs over the 6K course in 30th place in 23.42.4. Catlin Kelly was and Keri Molt tied for 48th in 24.11.1, Diana Sanchez was 61st in 24:43.4 and Angela Martinez finished 71st in 24:56.4 to round out the scoring for Glendale.

   For the men, Ricky Avila was the top Glendale finisher over the 8K course in 26:57.7. Rico Gutierrez was 33rd in 27:12.2, Miguel Flores was 64th in 28:02.7, Nicholas Marquez was 77th in 28:23.3 and Neil Jones was 94th in 28:47.0.

    Glendale competes in the Fresno Invitation Friday at Woodward Park at 8:30 a.m.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

    The Lady Vaqs improved to 1-2 this season with a five-game win over Antelope Valley College last Friday at home. Glendale was victorious 25-15, 25-27, 20-25, 25-13 and 15-12. Jessica Alvarez led the team with 20 kills and 11 digs and Roxanne Domines had 51 assists and two team blocks. Cindy Sevilla had nine service aces and one solo block, Sara Kert had five team blocks and Brittany Frederick had one solo block.

WOMEN'S GOLF

    Glendale finished seventh out of eight teams Friday and Saturday at the Desert Classic Tournament in Palm Springs. Tammy Panick from Glendale High set a school record with a second-round score of 73 after shooting 77 in the first round Friday. Imelda Treto shot 91 and 78, Diana Hernandez shot 96 and 88 and Jo Ann Valino shot 113 and 119.

    The Lady Vaqs are off this week and compete next in a Western State Conference match Monday September 13 at Alisal Ranch in Santa Barbara. Glendale hosts a home match Monday September 20 at the Oakmont Country Club.

MEN'S SOCCER

    Glendale started the 20010 season 0-2 after losing to San Bernardino Valley College 4-2 last Tuesday and 1-0 to Los Angeles Harbor College last Friday.

    The Vaqs played at Chaffey Tuesday and host Fullerton Friday at Sartoris Field at 7:00 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER 

    The Lady Vaqs are 0-2 starting the 2010 season after falling to Ssan Bernardino Valley College 8-0 last Tuesday and 3-1 to Harbor last Friday.

    Glendale played at Moorpark Tuesday and plays at Allan Hancock Friday at 2:00 p.m.

FOOTBALL

    Glendale opened the 2010 season with a 41-20 loss to Pasadena City College.

    The Vaqs host Golden West College Saturday at Sartoris Field at 7:00 p.m.
