The men and women were off last weekend and conclude their season Saturday at the state meet at Woodward Park in Fresno at 10:00 a.m. The women are the defendsing state champions and the men finished third in 2009.
Sophomore Tammy Panich became the first female golfer in school history to qualify for the state meet when she tied for second and finished third overall in the Southern California regionals last Monday at Allisal Ranch in Salvang. Panich shot 73 Sunday and 78 Monday for a two round total of 151.
The state tournament is Monday and Tuesday at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino.
Glendale started the season with a pair of wins in the Glendale College Tip-Off Tournament Friday and Saturday. They beat Victor Valley 80-67 Friday and Compton 98-91 Saturday. In the win Saturday over Compton, Antonio Garrett led Glendale with 32 points on 13 of 16 from the field and Narbeh Ebrahimian added 19 and hit 12 of 12 free throwns.
The Vaqueros play at Los Angeles Pierce College Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
The Lady Vaqs dropped a pair of matches last week to fall to 6-16 overall and 2-9 in Western State conference play. They fell to L.A. Pierce in three games alst Tuesday 25-16, 25-15 and 25-15 and lost in three games to Canyons Friday 25-16, 25-15 and 25-18. In the loss to Canyons, Jessica Alvarez led Glendale with 12 kills and Karen Loera had 21 assists. Cindy Sevilla and Raquel Valenzuela had two service aces each and Valenzuela also had 19 digs and Roxanne Domines had two team blocks..
Glendale ends the regular season with a home game at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. They have a bye Thursday.
Glendale split a pair of matches last week to end the regular season 5-12-4 overall and 4-9-1 in WSC play. They beat Citrus 3-2 last Tuesday and fell to L.A. Mission 2-1 last Friday.
The Lady Vaqs dropped a pair of matches last week to end the regular season 4-15-1 overall and 3-10-1 in WSC play. They lost to Canyons 2-1 last Tuesday and fell to Pierce 4-1 Friday.
Glendale beat L.A. Southwest College 42-27 Saturday to finish the season 1-5 on the Pacific Division of the American Conference and 1-9 overall. Omar Sanchez-Berrera led the ground attack with 101 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 15 carries and Joshua Nakamoto had 99 yards on 24 carries and two scores, one on the ground and one receiving. Freshman quarterback Kevin Hunter passed for 163 yards on 11 of 24 and one touchdown and Partick Donqahue caught five passes for 100 yards. Jacob Meza paced the defense with nine tackles and Zane Archer added seven and Oscar Gladden recovered three fumbles.
The Lady Vaqs are 0-2 this season and host the Vaquero Shootout Friday through Sunday. Glendale opens up against Irvine Valley Friday at 7:00 p.m.
