The Vaqueros advaned to the Southern California Regionals for the fiurst time in school history Saturday with a come-from-behind 9-8 win over Cypress College in game #3 in the best two out of three firts round series of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. Cypress took game #1 Friday 7-1 and Gledale won game #2 9-4 to force the third game Saturday. In the thrilling finale, the Vaqueros rallied from two runs down in the bottom of the ninth inning powered by a solo home run by Sako Chapjian and a game winning single by Josh Canales. Chapjian had a tremendous day as he slammed a pair of three-run homers in the first game win Saturday and was four for five in the second game including two doubles and a solo home run to lead off the ninth inning.
Glendale (23-14) competes in the Southern California Super Regionals Friday through Sunday May 13-15 at Rio Hondo College. They face Palomar College (28-11) Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the four-team format which also features host school Rio Hondo and San Diego Southwestern College. Palomar is seeded No. 5 in the playoffs and Glendale is seeded No. 6.
TRACK AND FIELD
Sophomore Karen Rosas quaified for the state meet and led a list of several qualifiers for the men and women at the Southern California prelims last Friday at Mt. SAC. Rosas finished third in 38.38.78 to qualify for the state meet May 20-21 at American River College in Sacramento. Vivian Ochoa finished eighth in the same race in 39.39.00 but her qualification will have to wait until the results from the Northern regionals can be processed.
For the women, Alyssa Selve qualified for the finals with a second place finish in her heat of the 800 meters in 2:19.08 and finished third in her heat of the 1500 in 4:46.19. Laura Pleumer was fourth in her heat of the 1500 in a personal best time of 4:46.27 and Angela Martinez was fifth in the same race in 4:47.18. Catlin Kelly was second in her heat of the 3000-meter steeplechase in 11:33.90 and Cecilia Nicolas was second in her heat in a personal best time of 11:33.84 and Diana Sanchez was third in the same race in 11:39.24. Carissa Porter was third in her heat of the 100 meters ina personal best time of 12.05 and was third in her race of the 200 meters in a personal best time of 24.84.
For the men, Neil Jones was a winner in his heat of the 800 meters in 1:53.96 and took second in his heat of the of the 1500 meters in 3:56.16. The 4 x 400 relay team of Harold Tabora, Adrian Anderson, Neil Jones and Trent williams qualified with a personal best time of 3:19.85.
Glendale competes in the Southern California Championships Friday at 10:00 am at Mt. San Antonio College. The state championships are Friday and Saturday May 20-21 at American River College in Sacramento.
Glendale competes in the Southern California Regionals Monday May 9 at Bermuda Dunes Golf Course near Palm Springs.
Alex Sarkissian continued his outstanding play this season with a victory in singles at the Southern California Regional last Saturday in Palm Springs. Though he and partner Trevor Campbell fell in the doubles final, both qualiified for the state tournament at Fresno City College Thursday through Saturday. That event concludes the 2011 season.
Sarkissian was also named honorable mention for state male athlete of the month for April for the second consecutive month. He was named the state athlete of the month in February.
The 2011 season officially ended for the Lady Vaqs at the Southern California Regionals at Grossmont College. Samantha Sismundo in singles and the doubles team of Sevana Zargarian and Sismundo failed to reach round of 16 to qualify for state tournamernt to end their season.
