Alex Sarkissian ended his 2011 undefeated when he claimied the state singles championship Saturday at Fresno City College. Sarkissian also won the prestigious Ojai Invitational singles title as well as last week's Southern California Regional title and ended the season 35-0 in singles matches, 70-0 in sets.

Glendale defeated Southwestren College of San Diego 11-5 Sunday to win the Southern California Super Regional playoffs at Rio Hndo College for the first time in school history. With the victory, the Vaqueros advance to the state championships Friday through Sunday May 20-22 at Bakersfield College for the first time since 1980. Glendale also defeated Palomar College 9-2 Friday and beat No. 1 seeded Rio Hondo College 7-6 Saturday.
Five Vaqueros including Ellis Whitman, Sako Chapjian, Seas Spear, John Schwer and Myles Neimeyer all had two hits each for Glendale in the win over Southwestern Sunday in suppor of winning pitcher Thomas Korn. Chapjian homered and doubled as did Whitman.
Glendale, 28-14 and the No. 2 seeded team from the South, will face San Joaquin Delta College, 31-11 and the No. seed from the North, at 12 noon Friday and Santa Ana faces Ohlone at 6 p.m Friday in the second game. The losers bracket games are at 10 am Saturday with the winner bracket game starting at 2 p.m and a third game to follow Saturday. Championship bracket games start at 11 am Sunday.
TRACK AND FIELD
Karen Rosas and Neil Jones each qualified in two events for the state meet May 20-21 at American River College in Sacramento. Rosas qualified in the 10,000 meters May 6 at the Southern California prelims May 6 at Mt. SAC and won the 5000 meters Friday at the Southern California finals in 17:36.96. Jones qualified for state with a second place finish in the 1500 meters in 3:55.89 and a fourth place finish in the 800 in 1:53.59.
Other qualifiers include Carissa Porter with a sixth place finish in the 100 meters in 12.12 and she also took sixth in the 200 in 24.88. Alyssa Selve was fifth in the 1500 meters in 4:40.65 with Angela Martinez taking ninth in 4:54.29 and Laura Pleumer taking 10th in 4:58.95. Cecillia Nichols was fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 11:37.99 and Catlin Kelly took sixth in 11:38.75 and Diana Sanchez was seventh in 11:42.09.
Glendale finished second in the Southern California Regionals last Monday at the Bermuda Dunes Country Club to qualify for the state tournament May 16 at Kings Country Club in Hanover, Ca.
The Vaqueros shot 765 as a team for the 36-hole regionals and trailed So. Cal champion College of the Desert by nine strokes at 756. Brennan Amirkhizi shot 147, Michael Timpson carded 148, Chris Ramirez shot 152, Vincent Lam shot 161, Danny Fernandez shot 164 and Jin Park shot 166.
