With the start of the fall athletic season just a few weeks away, a brief look back at last year’s accomplishments and a preview of what’s ahead for GCC’s 16 teams should give Vaquero fans plenty of optimism in 2010-2011.
The 2009 women’s cross country team would obviously get team high honors for winning the state championship and a clean sweep of post season honors. The men’s team finished third in state, third in Southern California and won the Western State Conference title. Karen Rosas, Vivian Ochoa and Brianna Jauregui will be the top returners for the women and Rico Gutierrez and Ricky Avilla will pace the men.
The women’s volleyball team was much improved last year and will be led this season by All-WSC outside hitter Jessica Alvarez. The football team will now compete in the American Division of the Pacific Conference. Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams will again face tough competition in and out of conference and the women’s golf team should be improved under men’s team coach Greg Osbourne.
In basketball, Brian Beauchemin will be back for his 32nd year coaching the men’s team and the women’s team will have a new look under first year head coach Carrie Miller.
The 2010 spring season featured a strong showing by the men’s and women’s track and field teams that had a combined nine athletes earn All-American honors. The women’s team finished fourth in the state meet, the highest finish in school history and sophomore Rosa Del Toro won an individual state title in the 1500 meters. The 2011 season should be as exciting as several athletes return in all events with the distance runners being among the best in the state.
The men’s golf team had its finest showing since it was reinstated in 2008 and should be even better in 2011. The baseball, softball and men’s and women’s tennis teams will all field competitive squads this season as Glendale College continues to showcase one of the most outstanding athletic programs in Southern California.
