Referrals for Education
There are two reasons GAIN may have referred you to GCC CalWORKs:
- Remedial Education, which includes ESL (English as a Second Language), basic math, reading, and GED; or
- Vocational Training, which means education for a job or career (including earning a degree or certificate.)
DO YOU KNOW WHAT KIND OF A REFERRAL YOU HAVE?
If you don't, ask your GAIN/REP Worker or your GCC Case Manager for your GN 6006.
When you first started GAIN, you took a test called a "Vocational Assessment." This test gave you two jobs for which GAIN would support your training. You must train for one of these two jobs at GCC.
If you do not like or agree with the job GAIN says you should train for, please tell your GCC CalWORKs Case Manager as soon as possible. We can help you talk with your GAIN/REP Worker about changing your job goal. However, it is easier to change your goal soon after you take the vocational assessment test.
DO YOU KNOW YOUR GAIN VOCATIONAL GOALS? HAVE YOU READ YOUR VOCATIONAL ASSESSMENT?
If you need a copy, ask your GAIN/REP Worker or GCC Case Manager for your GN 6014.
When you signed your Welfare-to-Work Plan with your GAIN/REP Worker, you agreed to follow a certain educational path, and to complete the parts of your education in a specific order. You must follow your Welfare-to-Work Plan.
If you do not like or agree with your Welfare-to-Work Plan, talk to your GCC CalWORKs Case Manager as soon as possible. We may be able to help you change your Welfare-to-Work Plan so that it works for you.
HAVE YOU READ YOUR WELFARE-TO-WORK PLAN?
IF NOT, YOU SHOULD DO SO RIGHT AWAY!
Your Welfare-to-Work Plan is the contract you sign with your GAIN/REP Worker. If you need a copy, ask your GAIN/REP Worker or GCC Case Manager for your WTW2.
ESL Students Who Want to Take Non-ESL Classes
We want you to succeed in your non-ESL classes. For this reason, we recommend that students who are ESL level 3 or lower do not enroll in non-ESL classes for GAIN credit.
IF YOU ARE ESL LEVEL 4 OR HIGHER AND WANT TO BEGIN TAKING NON-ESL CLASSES, TALK WITH YOUR GCC CASE MANAGER BEFORE ENROLLING.
Your GCC Case Manager will ensure that the correct paperwork has been completed with GAIN/REP for you to move on to vocational education. If the right paperwork is not completed before you enroll, GAIN/REP may choose not to pay for your books and supplies.
GCC CalWORKs will only verify costs for books and supplies that are required for the classes that are part of your GAIN-approved program. You may not ask for reimbursement for books or supplies that are for another person, including your spouse, children, or friends.
Receipts: We will only accept your own original receipt. We will not accept copies of receipts or receipts for books or supplies someone else has paid for. We will not accept reprinted receipts or receipts that have been cut or altered in any way. Receipts for internet payments must indicate "paid."
Physical Education (PE)
GCC CalWORKs only verifies your PE hours to GAIN/REP if you have been referred for vocational education. PE is not part of the ESL program at GCC and the GCC CalWORKs Program will not verify PE hours for students referred for remedial or ESL education. Furthermore, we will not verify requests for PE supplies for students referred for remedial education, only.
Students with Vocational Referrals who take PE can have their PE hours verified to GAIN for up to two units, only.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
ESL students are referred to GCC to learn enough English to be able to take regular college classes or to find a job that requires English language skills. We want you to learn English, and that is the reason for the following policies:
- Noncredit ESL students enrolled in Fall or Spring terms must take Level 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 ESL classes.
- Noncredit ESL Computer Lab alone is not sufficient for you to learn English. ESL Computer Lab may be used in addition to an ESL-Level class for a maximum of 16 hours per week.
- Students referred to GCC for ESL may not take Keyboarding for GAIN credit, unless they have referrals for vocational or bridging education.
Keyboarding is not a major. You may take keyboarding to fulfill some of your GAIN hours, if it is required for your program. You may not take only keyboarding.
Students referred to GCC for ESL may not take Keyboarkding for GAIN credit, unless they have referrals for vocational or bridging education.
Student Education Plans
All CalWORKs students with vocational referrals are required to submit a Student Education Plan to the CalWORKs office. If you do not have a Student Education Plan, please make an appointment with a GCC Academic Counselor to create one.
SIPPs (Self-Initiated Program Participants)
SIPPs are students who were enrolled in a GAIN-approved educational program before their first
meeting with a GAIN/REP Worker. SIPPs attend school under different rules than county-referred students and do not take a Vocational Assessment test.
DURING YOUR FIRST MEETING WITHYOUR GAIN/REP WORKER, BE SURE TO TELL HIM OR HER IF YOU ARE ALREADY ENROLLED IN SCHOOL.
