Brief Biographical Sketch of Dr. Jim Riggs, Interim Superintendent/President
Jim Riggs has an extensive background in community college leadership and instruction. He is currently taking a one-year leave of absence from his faculty position at California State University, Stanislaus to serve as the Interim Superintendent/President at Glendale Community College. Since 2008 he has served as a professor of community college education at CSU Stanislaus where he teaches full-time in the university’s Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership and supervises research in the areas of community college leadership and student success. Prior to joining the faculty at CSU Stanislaus, he served as the president of Columbia College, in Sonora, California from 1997 to 2007. Other leadership posts include serving as Vice President of Education and Student Services at Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield, Illinois; Executive Dean of the Clear Lake Campus of Yuba College; Associate Dean of Instruction/Extended Education, Merced College; and Director of the Kachemak Campus of the University of Alaska. He began his career as a music and humanities instructor at Wenatchee Valley College in Washington State. He also taught doctoral courses at the University of the Pacific and Sacramento State University, and has published articles on issues related to community college leadership.
Dr. Riggs obtained a doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Curriculum from the University of Southern California and holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in music. He has been active in numerous educational, civic and cultural organizations during his 35-year career in education.
Dr. Riggs has relocated to Glendale for the school year. He and his wife, Juliann, have their permanent home in Columbia, California located in the Sierra foothills north of Yosemite National Park. They have three grown children who live in Northern California with their families. He and Juliann also have two wonderful grandchildren ages, 3 ½ years old and 1 year old.
