Students are strongly encouraged to view the sample tests for each level. This helps students avoid tests that are not appropriate for their skill level, eliminate frustration, and avoid placement delays. The samples contain representative types of questions that could be asked on that particular exam. The questions on the actual exams get more difficult as they progress.
No Calculators are allowed on these tests.

Basic Math (Arithmetic)

The computerized version is untimed and consists of 17 questions. A paper/pencil version is also available and the test is timed for 45 minutes.
Students can place into the following Math levels from this test:

Math Level 1 Math 155, 255
Math Level 2 Math 145 or 245
Students who score very high are eligible to take the Beginning Algebra Test.

 

Beginning Algebra (Algebra I)

This test is available on the computer and as a paper/pencil test, both formats are timed for 45 minutes.

Students can place into the following Math levels from this test:

Math Level 3, 145 or 245 ok for Math 141
Math Level 3.5/4 Ok for Math 119 or 219 or 131
Math Level 4 Math 101, 119 or 219
Students who score very low on this exam will get no placement, but be directed to take the Arithmetic test.
Students who score very high will be eligible to take the Intermediate Algebra Test.

Intermediate Algebra (Algebra II)

This test is available on the computer and as a paper/pencil test, both formats are timed for 45 minutes.

Students can place into the following Math levels from this test:

Math Level 2 Math 145 or 245
Math Level 3 Math 141
Math Level 4 Math 101, 119 or 219
Math Level 5 Math 100, 110, 111, 112, 135, 136,138
Students who score very low on this exam will get no placement, but will take the Beginning Algebra test.
Students who score very high are eligible to take the Pre-Calculus Test.

Intermediate Algebra Sample Test/Study Packet

 

Pre-Calculus

This test is available on the computer and as a paper/pencil test, both formats are timed for 60 minutes.

Students can place into the following Math levels from this test:

Math Level 5 Math 100, 110, 111, 112, 135, 136,138
Math Level 6 Math 103
Students who score very low on this exam will get no placement, but be directed to take the Intermediate Algebra Test.

Pre-Calculus Sample Test/Study Packet

Chemistry

This test is required for placement into Chemistry 101, unless student has successfully completed Chemistry 110. This is a paper/pencil test and students are allowed 45 minutes for the exam and may use a basic calculator (scientific calculators are not allowed). Students who take this exam must have placed in Math 101 or higher and English 120 at Glendale Community College in order to process their Chemistry Test.
