More than 200 alumni, students and faculty members attended the Glendale College Alumni Council’s first “Friendraiser” held at the J. Walter Smith Student Center last holiday season. The inaugural event in a series designed to reintegrate former students into campus life, the Welcome Back Mixer offered a forum for alumni to meet current students, faculty members and fellow alumni. “One of the most important contributions of a community college is to engage and be an active part of the community,” said Nalini Lasiewicz, who headed the committee that coordinated the event. “Alumni are indispensable to achieving that connection.” To welcome former students back to campus, the Alumni Council engaged the culinary arts department to cater an appetizer buffet and the music department to provide entertainment. A cash bar was available for the 21-and-over set.

SPARK, a peer-mentoring program, and the ASGCC manned tables to represent the current student body. The Media Arts, Music, Nursing, Dance, Athletics and Journalism Departments also had tables and showcased current student projects. Dr. David Viar, GCC’s Superintendent/President gave the welcoming speech.

Recent graduates look forward to adding other alumni to their professional networks, and older alumni to see the campus, often for the first time in years, and to reconnect with classmates. Ofelya Martirosyan, a former journalism student, and recent CSUN graduate, said “I came for the networking opportunities. I’m doing a lot of freelance writing these days, and I’d like to connect with alumni who could use my services.” Alumni are encouraged to join the Alumni Association for a nominal fee. “Our entire goal here is to provide a fun environment for alumni, friends, and community members to network and re-connect to the campus community” said Lasiewicz.
